What is Peer Support with SOMN?

At the Shades of Motherhood Network (SOMN), our peer

support model is rooted in healing, connection, and

empowerment. We recognize that Black and Brown

mothers face unique challenges shaped by historical and

generational trauma. Through peer support, we provide

culturally grounded, community-centered care that

honors lived experiences and fosters collective

well-being.

Our vision is to create a future where maternal mental health equity is achieved by addressing the enduring impact of post-traumatic slave syndrome (PTSS). We aim to build a society that acknowledges this history, works to heal its generational wounds, and promotes mental well-being for all.

Why is this part of our Mental Health HUB

The Shades of Motherhood Network (SOMN) strengthens the Mental Health HUB by providing culturally responsive peer support for mothers navigating mental health challenges such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and stress. Through shared lived experiences, SOMN creates safe spaces that reduce isolation, build trust, and normalize conversations about mental well-being, especially for mothers from marginalized communities who may face barriers to traditional care.

As part of the HUB, SOMN connects participants to additional mental health resources, including therapy referrals and wellness programs, while empowering peer leaders to serve as advocates within their communities. This model not only complements clinical services but also fosters healing, resilience, and long-term mental wellness through authentic connection and community care.
