Overview

Girl, Get a Doula is a documentary that chronicles the journey of The Shades of Motherhood Network and the community-led response to the Black maternal health crisis in Spokane, Washington. The film centers Black women’s lived experiences while highlighting culturally rooted solutions that save lives.

Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy- and birth-related complications than white women. Spokane is a doula desert, where limited access to culturally responsive care deepens existing disparities. This film explores how grassroots healthcare communities—doulas, peer supporters, counselors, and cultural practitioners—are essential to improving maternal health outcomes.

Why This Film Matters

The Black maternal health crisis is not only about birth—it is about the absence of a holistic system of care. This film reframes maternal health through a cultural and community lens, emphasizing prevention, mental health, postpartum support, and long-term wellness. By centering Black-led solutions, the film challenges medicalized narratives and demonstrates what equity in maternal care can look like in practice.
